Kindergarten Literacy | Foundations for Reading

Days: Mondays AND Wednesdays

Time: 8:15 AM - 8:55 AM

Location: Pathfinders Learning Lab (217 North 10th Street, Santa Paula, CA)

Program Description:

Kindergarten Literacy lays the groundwork for strong, confident readers by building the foundational skills that support early reading success. Rooted in the science of reading and designed with joyful learning in mind, this class offers developmentally appropriate instruction through stories, songs, games, and hands-on exploration.

Students will:

  • Build phonological awareness through rhyming, syllables, and sound play
  • Practice letter names and sounds through engaging, multisensory activities
  • Strengthen oral language and listening comprehension with rich read-alouds
  • Develop print awareness and early writing through drawing, labeling, and dictation
  • Explore beginning alphabet knowledge and sound-symbol connections
  • Foster a love for books and storytelling through interactive story experiences

Weekly routines help students feel secure and successful, while optional take-home activities support families in creating a literacy-rich home environment. This is a playful, purposeful first step into the world of reading.

Additional Details:

Phonological Awareness Activities: Students will build awareness of how spoken words work by clapping syllables, identifying rhyming words, and playing games that isolate beginning, middle, and ending sounds—critical early steps toward reading readiness.

Oral Language Development: Through daily conversations, storytelling, and vocabulary-rich read-alouds, students will expand their language skills, listening comprehension, and expressive vocabulary.

Alphabet Knowledge & Sound Play: Children will engage with letters and sounds in meaningful ways—learning that letters represent sounds and practicing those connections through songs, movement, and hands-on materials.

Print Concepts: Students will explore how books and print work—learning that text moves left to right, words are made of letters, and print carries meaning.

Emergent Writing: Using drawing, labeling, and letter-like forms, students will begin to express their ideas through early writing experiences that support letter formation, sound-symbol understanding, and storytelling.

Multisensory Literacy Routines: Each lesson includes fun, predictable routines using movement, manipulatives, and visuals to engage a range of learning styles and reinforce foundational skills.

Playful, Purposeful Learning: Literacy skills are taught through structured play, songs, and creative activities that honor how young children learn—building confidence and motivation along the way.

Family Literacy Connection: Families receive weekly suggestions and take-home materials to reinforce classroom learning and nurture a love of reading at home through simple routines and shared story time.
